MAUREEN SUGRUE - textile design

Maureen Sugrue is a dedicated student of clothology. She works on cloth, a medium which implies and offers radically different qualities than a stretched canvas, a chunk of marble, a photo or a matted and framed work. She is a graduate of Emily Carr College of Art and Design as well as the Capilano College Costuming for Stage and Screen Diploma Program. Printmaking is the major focus of her work, particularly block printing as she is attracted to its directness, low tech, old-fashioned simplicity. Dyeing enables her to experiment with a range of beautiful custom colours, while cutting and sewing adds a whole world of possibilities. Screen printing also offers the chance of using photographic images. She experiments with overlays of color and pattern to build depth and visual interest. Her inspiration comes from the many countries she has visited and her close observation of nature.
